Better candy bars come from better ingredients
One of the questions I always ask myself whenever I read a list of ingredients is "why is that in there?"
Well, in case you're the sort of person who does that (or thinks they ought to) let me take the guesswork out of it for our products. The descriptions below reflect the results of our own research into many different articles and studies, but we encourage everyone to investigate what they eat and make informed decisions about what they feed themselves and their friends and families.
Below is a list of all the ingredients in an Angell Bar, and the reason they're therei.
Made from the cacao fruit, real chocolate is one of the most delicious foods there is, and has the added benefit of being solid at room temperatre, but melting in your mouth. Besides being a heavenly food experience, new research continues to surface on the health benefits (everything from heart health to better blood flow and more) of the anti-oxidants and flavonols it contains. While most of the media attention has focused on the health benefits of dark chocolate, milk chocolate has more antioxidants than almost any other fruit, including prunes, pomegranates, and blueberries. In addition, all of our chocolate is Fair Trade Certified®.
In the book "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth" coconut was given a star, indicating that “even among that stellar group of foods it’s a standout.” Apart from being delicious and adding a great texture, coconuts are rich in lauric acid, a very healthy MCT (medium chain triglyceride) that is known for being antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal, and boosting the immune system, as well as being highly digestible.
Apart from being crunchy and tasty, eating almonds is said to have the same effect as the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E and magnesium and offer protein, fiber, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron.
While they deliver a delicious crunch and great taste, they are also delivering anti-oxidants (more than many fruits), niacin (B3), vitamin E, and the flavonoid resveratrol, as well as a healthy dose of fiber.
Organic Brown Rice Crisps:
Brown Rice crisps contain manganese, protein, and fiber. They're also a delicious and gluten-free way to add a crispy, crackly texture to our Angell Crisp bar makes it totally irresistible.
Oats are a whole grain that is an excellent source of sustained energy, and are a good source of fiber, zinc, vitamin E and other nutrients. In addition, they have a low glycemic index.
Salt in its purest form, the tiny amount of sea salt in our bars helps to accentuate their flavor, and contains NO chemical anti-caking agents, such as sodium aluminosilicate.
Organic, Fair Trade Certified® Vanilla:
While there are lots of different theories about the benefits of vanilla (everything from treating cancer to being an aphrodisiac) the truth is that the amount we use is so small that the only real benefits we claim are its wonderful taste and the fact that ours was produced to meet organic and Fair Trade standards.
Honey is a natural, nutritive sweetener with both antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. It adds a nice complexity to the sweet notes in our Snow Angell bar.
Organic Tapioca Syrup:
A natural sweetener made from from cassava (also called manioc), which has a pleasant, mildly sweet taste.
We made decisions about what to include in our bars based on our own research and the advice of food professionals.
